Dungsay Ratna Vajra Rinpoche was born on November 19, 1974. At the age of only five months he received the traditional enthronement ceremony at Tharig Rinpoche Monastery. From an early age, Dungsay Ratna Vajra Rinpoche traveled extensively accompanying his father on many international teaching engagements. At the age of six, on December 20, 1980, Ratna Vajra began his official training of all common and uncommon teachings of the Sakya tradition, at Sakya Thubten Namgyal Ling Monastery in Puruwala, India. In 1986, at the age of twelve, he made his first retreat. In 1990, Ratna Vajra enrolled at Sakya College where he studied philosophy especially with the late Khenpo Migmar Tsering Rinpoche. He also received teachings, initiations and blessings from his father, the 14th Dalai Lama, Jamgon Lama Sakya Pandita, Appey Khen Rinpoche, Khenpo Kunga Wangchuk Rinpoche, Khenpo Ngawang Kunga Lekshey Rinpoche, and Khenpo Lungrik Senge Rinpoche. Despite numerous studies and initiations with these great masters Ratna Vajra Rinpoche confessed in his autobiography, written in 2001, that “due to my lack of interest and effort, I am not very well educated nor am I actually a good practitioner of the Dharma. ”- proving that even a great teacher can still feel the need to improve.

Dungsey Ratna Vajra married in 2003 to Dagmo Kushog Kalden Sakya and they have 3 children.
